5 Pinterest Tips to Start Gaining Leads and Generating Income

It's still amazing to me to think that with how long Pinterest has been around, it's still a vastly underutilized social media platform when it comes to people's businesses.  How do I know that?  I'm one of "those" people, guilty of thinking Pinterest was only for photography, DIY projects, and weddings.  I shudder to think about where our Pinterest would be at now had we started it 6 years ago when we started our first business . . . but as the saying goes, "The best time to start was yesterday.  The second best time to start is today."

So we started, two weeks ago to be exact at the time of this blog, and here is a breakdown of some of the key analytics when it came to our growth:

My final analysis: Pinterest is incredibly fun, and as you can see, the potential is insane!  I will say that to get these kinds of numbers on Pinterest, you do have to put in a lot of work, especially at the beginning.  I can promise you, however, that the work you put in will be WELL worth it, not just for the leads and income you generate, but also for the SEO and ranking on Google that happens as a bi-product.

Whether you're thinking about starting a Pinterest (which you should), or you've been on Pinterest for a while and you're looking for some tips to help you get to that next level, you're in the right place!  I'm going to give you my 5 best tips for growing on Pinterest, and ultimately turning that growth into leads and income.

The first tip is to figure out the tools that you'll need to help you with your growth on Pinterest.  Just like on Instagram, with say Planoly or Later, Pinterest has something called, "Tailwind" and it will be a game-changer for your Pinterest journey.  Not only can you schedule through their app, but it also gives you suggestions based on best practices, analytics, and access to Tailwind Communities, which are amazing groups focused on helping each other share content.

It can be a little on the pricier side ($30/mo), but it is highly worth it.  With how much content we are creating for Pinterest, it would be impossible to schedule and keep track of it all without Tailwind.  I do believe they have a free trial at the time of this blog, so definitely give it a try and see how you like it!

The second tip is to make sure that everything is "optimized" as we in the business like to say for SEO.  Most people immediately think of captions, which is understandable.  But I can't tell you how many people's profiles I go to and they don't have an optimized title for their board, or even worse, they don't have a description written for their boards (this one I see a lot).

This is all SEO you guys, and searchable through Pinterest, so by ignoring these areas, you are wasting valuable space that you could be using to gain attention for your business.  So take a day and go back through the following: board titles, board descriptions, board covers (yes, Pinterest is an image search platform), and your about section.  Make sure you are writing great copy with keywords in mind for each section.

The third thing is to go "all-in" on Idea Pins.  If you've already been creating TikToks and Instagram Reels then I have some great news for you!  Simply re-purpose your old videos, removing the watermarks using ssstik.io if you need to, then re-writing a catchy, keyworded title to help you rank on Pinterest.

If you don't have a lot of short-form content already created, then I would highly suggest taking a weekend and batch creating a ton.  What Jill and I did was take each weekend for a month, and batch created as many TikTok's as we could.  What we ended up with were over 400 videos that we can now re-purpose anywhere we want.

The fourth tip is to write really great captions.  And I know that this may seem like common sense, but a lot of people on Pinterest just "keyword stuff" their captions with search terms that they think people will use.  First, it makes you as a business owner look spammy and very unprofessional when you do that.  Second, you're wasting a valuable opportunity by NOT writing great captions.

Why you want to write valuable captions is because of the searchability, of course, but also because you can then re-repurpose those captions to other platforms, just like your short-form video that was previously discussed.  Re-purposing your Pinterest captions to things like Instagram and a blog are so valuable and precious time savers as well!

The last tip revolves around just how much content you should be sharing on Pinterest every single day.  As far as Tailwind's "best suggestions," the amount of times you should be posting is between 20-25.  While that may sound like a lot, that isn't ALL original content.  You should also be re-pinning other people's content as well, as long as it adds to the overall feel of your feed and brand.

How we do it is we pin 25 times a day, with 12 of those posts being other people's content shared to our various boards equally.  The other 13 posts are a combination of the following content: idea pins, carousels, videos, quotes, infographics, freebies, testimonials, etc.  Taking a day to create templates for yourself in something like Canva will help you to create that much content at scale, as opposed to creating everything individually.

The more you pin, the more you'll grow.  As long as your content is good, and you're being consistent, you can see numbers like the ones above.  Trust me, if we can do it, you can do it!
